Alex Gonzalez struck out 11 McNeese State batters on Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Oral Roberts University team baseball fell to the Cowboys, 3-1.

ORU falls to 13-9 in Southland Conference play and 20-27 overall, while the Cowboys improve to 21-26 overall and 8-14 in the SLC.

Gonzalez (7-5) suffered the loss in the game despite allowing three runs on just four hits.

Tyler Boss had the lone extra base hit for ORU with a double off the base of the wall to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Kevin Cho, Logan Domenico and Chris Williams added the three other Golden Eagle hits in the game.

Boss crossed the plate as the lone run for the Golden Eagles on a Brandon Healy groundout in the bottom of the second.

Gonzalez was rolling through the McNeese lineup, sitting down 13 straight Cowboys from the third to the seventh innings.

However, McNeese turned a couple of ORU mistakes into a run in the top of the eighth. Connor Lloyd reached base on a misplayed groundball to start the inning and scored on another error later in the frame.

With Phillip Lebleu on base in the top of the ninth, Jackson Gooch hit a go-ahead two-run home run to left.

Jason Gibson earned the victory for the Cowboys with eight innings of work and eight strikeouts. Tyler Parke entered in the ninth and set the Golden Eagles down in order for the save.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
