Investigators in Bartlesville are searching for a killer after a man was shot in his own driveway.

Police say Doug Diaz, 46, was working on his car outside his home in the 100 block of North Margarite, Wednesday night, when he was murdered.

Kim Thomas ran up to the house just moments after it happened. She said she can't think why anyone would want to kill her boyfriend.

"Doug was a wonderful person, he was a wonderful dad, he made the best friend you could ever have," Thomas said.

After eight years together, Thomas said her world came crashing down after hearing a gun shot.

"And Doug came around the corner and fell into my arms and he died," she said.

With his final moments, she said he tried to say something to her, but he couldn't

Bartlesville Police Capt. Jay Hastings said the 46-year-old was in this driveway around 10:30 Wednesday night, working on his car, when he was killed.

Neighbors say they're still trying to figure out who killed this quiet, unassuming man. They say he was extremely excited about his daughter finishing up school, and that she had plans to say with him this summer.

"Never bothered anybody, just lucky-go-Doug," said Shirley McCarty.

McCarty said she knew Diaz well and saw him just hours before he died.

"Everybody seems pretty destroyed about what happened, and it's pretty crazy for it to happen around here," said neighbor James Love.

Love lives two doors down from where the shooting happened. He said his father and other people in the community would bring their trucks to Diaz to be worked on.

Police went back to the scene Thursday to interview witnesses and clear up a few questions. Hastings said no witnesses have reported hearing a car drive off after the shooting.

They're still searching for a suspect.

"I want to know who done this, who took his life, and looked in his face and then shot him," Thomas said.

Anyone who has any information related to this case is asked to call Bartlesville Police at 918-338-4015.
