Sooners' NCAA Tournament Hopes In Jeopardy After Loss

Posted: Updated:

The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team continued to put its NCAA tournament chances in jeopardy Saturday night, falling to Kansas State, 5-2.

The loss helped Oklahoma State clinch the No. 2 seed for the Big 12 tournament, while the Sooners are now locked into the No. 4 or 5 seed with Baylor. Oklahoma will be the No. 4 seed if they knock off the Wildcats on Sunday.

Kansas State pitcher Joe Flattery picked up the win with OU pitcher Ralph Garza Jr. taking the loss. Jake Matthys worked the final 2.2 innings for the save.

The Wildcats put a run on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout. After that, it was a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the sixth, when Kansas State broke through for two more runs.

With the bases loaded, OU pitcher Dillon Overton coaxed Lance Miles to ground into what looked like an inning-ending double play. However, OU second baseman Hector Lorenzana threw wildly to first, allowing two runs to score.

Kansas State scored two more runs in the seventh on a two-RBI single from Mitch Meyer.

The Sooners tried to stage a last ditch rally in the ninth, resulting in two runs. Max White tripled to start the inning and was driven home by a Lorenzana single. After an out, Matt Oberste singled and moved Lorenzana over to third. Taylor Alspaugh then grounded into a fielder's choice that put Oberste out at second and scored Lorenzana. Garrett Carey grounded out to end the game.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the Sooners and Wildcats will face off in the finale on Sunday at 11 a.m.
