CREEK COUNTY, Oklahoma -

The EPA wants to add a former Creek County oil refinery to the Superfund list.  The 125-acre site is located on the northeast side of Bristow on West 221st Street.

The EPA says the site was the location of the former Lorraine and Wilcox Refinery, which operated from 1915 to 1965.

In a news release, the EPA says contaminants at the site include lead and polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons. The agency says the chemicals are found in crude oil and might cause cancer, reproductive or skin problems.

"Cleaning up severely contaminated sites is one of EPA's most important priorities," said EPA Regional Administrator Ron Curry. "By restoring these properties we're protecting people's health and helping to revitalize the community's land and economy."

Curry says adding the site to the Superfund list will allow for cleanup of the contamination.
