RedHawks Blast Cubs In Tuesday Matinee

The RedHawks pounded out eight runs in front of a big crowd Tuesday afternoon.

Brett Wallace had three hits with a two-run homer and Andy Simunic batted in three runs to lead the Oklahoma City RedHawks in an 8-5 win Tuesday against the Iowa Cubs in front of a crowd of 7,138 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Tuesday marked the fourth morning start of the season for the RedHawks, who improved to 4-0 in morning games and to 34-28 overall this season.

The RedHawks tied the current series, 1-1, against Iowa (29-35) and stole five bases in the win.

Iowa took the first lead of the game on a solo home run from Brett Jackson in the first inning, but the RedHawks responded quickly in the bottom of the frame.

Wallace's two-run homer to right field put Oklahoma City ahead, 2-1. The home run was Wallace's ninth of the season and tied him with Marc Krauss for the team lead.

The RedHawks led the remainder of the game.

A RBI-double from Jose Martinez scored Cody Clark for a 3-1 edge in the third inning.

Iowa's Junior Lake hit a bloop single that scored Steve Clevenger and cut Oklahoma City's lead to one run in the sixth, 3-2. The I-Cubs runners at first and third with two outs, but RedHawks reliever Kevin Chapman got Brian Bogusevic to pop out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Che-Hsuan Lin walked and then stole second and third base with one out. He scored on a sacrifice bunt by Simunic for a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Later in the inning, Jonathan Villar stole third base and scored on an throwing error by Iowa catcher Steve Clevenger.

Down 5-2 in the seventh, Iowa loaded the bases with two outs. Clevenger sent a ground ball to second base, but Jose Martinez mishandled it, allowing two runs to score. Two batters later Iowa had loaded the bases for Juinor Lake, but RedHawks reliever Rhiner Cruz got Lake to groundout and keep Oklahoma City in front.

A three-run bottom of the seventh inning then helped seal the Oklahoma City win. The RedHawks went ahead 6-4 on a throwing error by I-Cubs shortstop Brent Lillibridge before a two-out two-RBI single by Simunic put his team in front, 8-4.

Iowa's Ian Stewart hit a home run in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.

RedHawks starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski (3-2) won for the third time in five home starts. He tied his season high and posted his highest Triple-A total with seven strikeouts. He allowed two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings.

Oklahoma City closer Jose Valdez picked up his 13th save, striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Iowa pitcher Guillermo Moscoso (2-4) was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings. He issued three of the seven walks allowed by Iowa.

Oklahoma City's current series against Iowa continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
