MOORE, Oklahoma -

A small family-owned restoration company defends its reputation after a couple in Moore claims they were scammed. The owners of Service Professionals INC say there's a major misunderstanding.

Since the story first aired on News 9 Friday night, the company has been hearing from a lot of angry people. SPI has been in business for 29 years, and the owners say, this is the first time they've been accused of trying to take advantage of a customer.

"Our reputation is on the line every time we go out and service one of our customers," said SPI owner Phyllis Harris.

Terry and Debra McGee agreed to have SPI go into their tornado damaged home, and salvage some of their belongings. But when the couple got the bill they felt like they were overcharged.

"The first bill was $2,500 and some change and the very next day, they revised it, and the bill went to $7,100 and some change," said Terry and Debra McGee.

"Does that seem like an outrageous number to you?" "Absolutely not, no, absolutely not," said SPI owner, Phyllis Harris.

The McGees were charged $5,000 alone for cleaning clothes. Harris says she's seen textile cleaning bills double, if not triple that.

"If the bill was outrageous, then the adjuster would have questioned us about the bill, the adjuster approved everything," said Harris.

Harris says the claims adjuster said the couple's cleaning bill was, "more than fair."

"Mrs. McGee, dealing with her, she really didn't understand the total process, even working with the adjuster and trying to explain to Mrs. McGee," said Harris. "If they didn't want anything cleaned, then they would have pulled things aside, and said don't clean this, and don't clean that."

The McGees said Friday, they didn't have a problem paying the bill, they just think it's too much.

Meanwhile, Harris says they would never jeopardize their company's reputation for a couple thousand dollars.

The McGees have since canceled their appointment to pick up their belongings Tuesday morning.
