BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

A 24-inch water main break closed a Broken Arrow intersection for a short time Thursday morning.  Police said the line broke at 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of 9th and Kenosha.

Due to the break, Broken Arrow's acting City Manager declared a water emergency and issued a mandatory water rationing order.

Residents are asked to use water for only cooking and bathing. City pools and splash pads will be closed until further notice.

"We are asking our residents to curb water use for the next several hours to allow City crews to repair the line," said Acting Director of Communications Norm Stephens. "While water is still being distributed citywide, storage in the water tanks is low."

Stephens says City crews have begun repairing the break which could take 6 to 8 hours.

Water initially flooded the intersection at 9th and Kenosha, prompting police to stop traffic in all directions.

Police said once crews shut off the line, the water drained off the roadway and officers re-opened the intersection.
