From Devastation To Rebuilding, A Look At What Makes Us Oklahoma Strong

Posted: Updated:

May 19th, May 20th and May 31st.  Three days that will always be remember by Oklahomans.

What began as a normal spring day set off what would become a deadly weather outbreak. On May 19th several tornadoes ripped through central Oklahoma leaving destruction in Edmond, Carney, Little Axe, Bethel Acres and Shawnee.  This storm claimed the lives of 2 people and destroyed hundreds of homes.

On May 20th, a large EF-5 tornado tore through Newcastle and Moore, claming the lives of 24 people including 10 children. Two schools were hit and thousands of homes destroyed.  For many, this tornado brought back memories of the May 3rd, 1999 tornado.

Then on May 31st the widest tornado ever recorded pushed its way across the south side of El Reno.  This storm claimed the lives of 21 people, including 7 children.  What made this storm so dangerous was how big it was and the flooding rain it produced.

In the aftermath, Oklahomans did what Oklahomans do best, they came together to help those in need.  From search and rescue to cleaning up debris to reuniting lost pets with their owners, you gave from your hearts.

That is what makes Oklahoma great and makes you Oklahoma Strong.

News 9 worked with Toby Keith and his team to highlight some of your great actions during his benefit concert.  We have put them here so you can watch, remember and remain Oklahoma Strong.
