Feathered Fiends Attack Residents In Edmond Neighborhood

Dive bombing birds are attacking folks in an Edmond neighborhood.

It's that time of year when the Mississippi Kite Hawks get especially aggressive. And that is the case in the Bel Pointe Neighborhood, near Sorghum Mill Road and Coltrane.

Jim Bouye was jogging along the street Thursday morning when he came under attack. 

"They kind of scare you a little bit because of the talons," said Bouye.

It's not the first time the birds have hit him, but today they actually drew blood.

"I just looked in the mirror and there's a long scratch across the top of my head," said Bouye.

Those who live around here say the Mississippi Kite Hawks usually arrive in April, but the bombing starts when the babies hatch. And then they just seem to circle overhead waiting for unsuspecting victims to walk by.

"A lady fell down, whether she was knocked down, fell down or something," Roger Quinn who lives in the neighborhood tells us.

Roger says the birds have grown from nuisance to a full-feathered hazard that neighbors have just had to learn to deal with.

"They carry umbrellas, sticks. My neighbor carries a walking stick. He calls it a Moses stick," said Quinn.

Because the birds are a federally protected species, there's really nothing anyone in the neighborhood can do about them.
