The EMSA Board of Trustees on Wednesday unanimously approved an ambulance service provider contract with American Medical Response.

American was chosen over Paramedics Plus, the current paramedic provider, a spokesperson said.

EMSA officials said the decision comes after an "exhaustive request" for proposal process that has lasted more than a year.

The board also voted to approve the recommendation by the Medical Control Board and the ambulance selection committee to increase emergency response times for emergency and non-emergency 911 calls.

The change comes after EMSA commissioned an independent, third-party study of best practices for emergency medical service providers from across the county.

The study found the response time change would have no effect on medical outcomes and significantly improve safety for medics and the general public when responding to emergencies, EMSA said.
