Springer's Home Run Sends RedHawks Past Cubs

George Springer's two-run home run in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and provided the eventual winning runs in a 4-3 Oklahoma City RedHawks win against the Iowa Cubs Sunday in front of 5,902 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The RedHawks (59-50) won their third straight game and took a 3-0 lead in their four-game series with Iowa (51-58).

Springer's homer on a fly ball over the left field fence was his 10th in 29 Triple-A games, and his second home run in as many nights.

He entered the game in a three-way tie for the most home runs in all of Minor League Baseball this season and moved into the lead Sunday with his 29th of the season, including his time with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Springer has also stolen 33 bases and is in striking distance of becoming the first player in the Minors to go 30/30 since Grant Desme in 2009.

The RedHawks took the first lead of the game in the second inning. An RBI double by Marwin Gonzalez to right field scored Brandon Laird for a 1-0 advantage.

Iowa tied the game in the top of the third inning on a RBI single to center field by Luis Flores.

RedHawks first baseman Jon Singleton homered to deep right-center field to lead off the fifth inning for a 2-1 edge. The home run was Singleton's fourth with Oklahoma City.

Iowa once again tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, 2-2, on a triple by Brad Nelson that scored Edgar Gonzalez.

After Springer's two-run shot in the sixth, the RedHawks held a two-run lead heading into the ninth inning. Ty Wright's single to right field scored Jae-Hoon Ha to bring the Cubs within one run with one out. Flores then flew out and Logan Watkins grounded out while facing RedHawks pitcher Josh Zeid to end the game.

Oklahoma City starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski (6-4) threw six innings, allowing two runs and six hits, walking none and striking out two in the win.

Zeid was credited with his 13th save of the season with the RedHawks.

Iowa starter Nick Struck fell to 5-8 after allowing four runs (three earned) and five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Oklahoma City's season series with Iowa concludes at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
