"What would drive someone to do something like that?" David Simms said.

Simms watched the scene unfold from his front porch just two doors down from where Curtis Jennings allegedly tried to kill a woman.

Oklahoma City Police initiated the manhunt early Monday morning after he ran out of the backdoor of the home at 1315 S.E.42nd. Police say initial reports indicated Jennings raped a 20-year-old woman, tied her up, and then began sawing through her neck.

Jennings' brother caught him in the act shortly after midnight. Police say the brother tried to stop the attack but Jennings pulled out a gun and told him to leave.

The brother called 911. When officers arrived to the home they found the injured woman lying on a tarp inside the home.

"That's pretty wild, with a handsaw. It takes all kinds I guess," Simms said after learning the details of the crime.

Simms said he did not know much about his neighbor until the arrest.

Jennings is a convicted felon who was out on parole for burglary, rape and kidnapping. Court records reveal Jennings beat, cut, and raped a woman in 2006. At that time, Jennings told his victim "I've gone too far, you are gonna call police."

The victim eventually turned him in. Jennings spent four years in prison before coming up for parole.

Now, Simms and other neighbors say they are surprised Curtis Jennings was in their neighborhood and not behind bars.

"Not too cool having that a couple houses away. I mean it's pretty scary," Simms said.

Jennings is now being held without bond on a complaint of rape and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Police are not releasing the victim's identity, but tell us she knew her attacker, and at last check, she was in serious condition at a local hospital.
