SALLISAW, Oklahoma -

Two U.S. Marines taking part in the Wounded Warrior Project traveled through Sallisaw Friday on their walk to Washington, D.C.

Adam Shatarsky and Christopher Senopole began their journey June 15 at Camp Pendleton in California.

"The Wounded Warrior Project was obviously the right choice for us being in the Marine Corps, and we thought it was just big enough and crazy enough to work," Adam Shatarsky said.

Friday's leg was along Interstate 40 in Sequoyah County.

KFSM TV, the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, was there when State Senator Mark Allen (R-Spiro) and state Representative John Bennett (R-Sallisaw) joined the pair. The lawmakers presented the Marines with a certificate of appreciation.

"It's just a small token from Oklahoma that we can give to them and thank them for what they're doing and recognize them for taking such great measures and steps to make sure that we take care of our wounded veterans," Bennett said.

The two men have raised more than $40,000 so far. They're hoping to reach $100,000 before their journey ends in October.
