Students in Oklahoma City Public Schools return to class Monday, except for those who attend a school that had to undergo some unexpected construction.

The district learned it had to completely replace Taft Middle School's outdated plumbing. The work was not finished in time to open the school on Monday, so classes are expected to begin August 12.

There are other big changes for the Oklahoma City school district this year. School uniforms are now required, but no student will be denied attendance if he or she is not wearing the right uniform. Parents experiencing financial issues can meet with principals to work out a plan.

Also, the district is trying to make sure students show up for the first week of school by enticing them with prizes. Last year, only 76 percent of students expected to attend school showed up for the first day of class. Oklahoma City Public Schools is also giving away prizes and rewards throughout the year to those with good attendance.
