Bethany Police are continuing to investigate what they call a "freak accident" on Saturday near Lake Overholser.

Police say a cyclist lost control and fell into traffic where he was killed while peddling in a charity event.

Chance Toles, 36, was a longtime cyclist, who was also a triathlete in training with his wife. That's why many in the cycling community are stunned as to how he crashed here on the course Saturday.

"It's saddening," said Se Kim, owner of 405 Bicycles in Norman. "We knew them, we knew Chance and we know his wife and daughter as well, we are very saddened by this incident."

Toles and his family were store regulars at 405 Bicycles, who often dropped in for gear or conversation.

This is a small shop, and it's in a tight community and all our customers seem to know us pretty well and on a first name basis, so they were very special to us," Kim said.

Kim says Toles, his wife Raynee and 9-year-old daughter Pasley were a kind and active family, he saw just days before the annual "Spin Your Wheels" charity run.

Bethany Police say Toles had a bike accident coming off Overholser Drive when he lost control and fell into a lane of oncoming traffic on the eastbound lane of Northwest 39th Expressway.

Police Chief Phil Cole says the roadways of the course are rough, but he isn't sure if that's to blame.

Albert Gray, CEO of The Children's Center, who puts on the charity run said in a statement:

"We are extremely saddened by this tragic accident, The Children's Center family extends our deepest sympathies to The Toles family."

Kim says the accident is a reminder to everyone on the road to stay vigilant.

"I just want drivers to be aware, and I want them to share the road," Kim said. "That's very important because it's so dangerous for cyclists."

The driver who hit Toles was not arrested. Police say he was shook up but stayed on scene. Bethany Police also have Oklahoma City police investigating the accident.

A memorial fund has been set up for Toles' wife and daughter.
