OKMULGEE, Oklahoma -

The Muscogee Creek Nation announced Thursday it is taking over the Creek Council House.

The historic building was built in the 1870s and had held dozens of tribal artifacts.

The house was owned by the City of Okmulgee and there was talk the artifacts would be auctioned off.

The Creek Nation bought the building and artifacts and hopes to make the building a tourist attraction.

"We just felt that it was very important to us as a nation, and according to our tradition and culture, to keep those things here," said Chief George Tiger.

The artifacts are being stored in a safe location in Cincinnati. There's no word when they'll be returned to Okmulgee.
