You talk about making the most of opportunity to play. Gabe Moyer jumped at a chance to start.
"At the end of the spring and summer and I said, ‘Yes sir,' and I started hitting the books hard and learning everything I could about it," Moyer said.
The position he had to learn was center, where Moyer is expected to start the season. But filling the role did not come easy for the redshirt senior. His first two years it was limited special teams action. Last year he played and started 4 games.
"Gabe's a great story," lineman Jake Alexander said. "He worked his way up to this role. He came in fat, sloppy, weak, but worked his butt off in the summer."
After working on getting in shape, he had to prepare for a position that is more intricate than just snapping the ball.
"When we're watching film, we're watching not only what we're supposed to do, but also what the tackle is supposed to do, what the center is supposed to do," lineman Stetson Burnett said. "So in reality, in one play, you could be moved to left tackle if someone gets hurt."
"You can see everything, you can scan, and see the linebackers, the safeties, the corners, you see how the defense is aligned, the linebackers are aligned," Moyer said. "You got to make a lot of snap positions, immediately."
Now that he's got his chance and his bachelor's degree, he's ready to play.
"I'm almost finished getting my masters now," Moyer said. "Just because I wanted to play so much, so it's nice. There is more pressure to play center. But it's nice to finally have some pressure also."
