A Tulsa man is in jail, accused of trying to run over a Tulsa airport police officer.

The officer fired shots at the suspect, but the suspect got away and was on the run for about eight hours before the Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force tracked him down.

It started when Fine Airport Parking called airport police, saying a man was trying car doors.

Police say, when the officer arrived, three people were in a white truck: the driver, a woman and, as they say, the bad guy. They say it seemed like it was going to be a routine arrest, but then things went south.

Task force officers brought Richard Kinison to the downtown police station after arresting him in East Tulsa.

They said he has several warrants out for his arrest, including auto theft and concealing stolen property, which might explain his actions early Tuesday morning at the airport.

They said, first, there was a call of a white truck stopping and starting in parking lots, then of a man prowling around, trying car doors, so when an airport officer spotted three people in a white truck, he ordered them out of it.

"The driver slides out, gets out of the car, obeys commands and gets on the ground, and as the officer tries to get everybody else out of the car, is when the bad guy slides over to the driver's seat, shuts the door and drives off and the action starts," said Tulsa Police Sgt. Dave Walker.

Two witnesses told police the man aimed the truck right at the officer, who then pulled out his gun and fired shots.

The woman passenger was still inside.

Tracy Wiedemann has been delivering pets to the airport for about 10 years, and has never experienced anything like this. She said she heard about five gunshots and locked herself in her van.

"We were all shaking for a little while, scared to come out of the doors," Wiedemann said.

Officers soon found the white truck not far away. They said the woman had jumped out the window to get away from the suspect.

She and the man, who was originally driving, both gave statements to police and were released.

Police say this seems to be a textbook case of an officer using deadly force in an effort to save his life.

"From everything I've seen, he was doing his job and our job is sometimes dangerous," Walker said.

Kinison was booked in jail on complaints of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police have not released the officer's name yet.

No one was hurt.

Investigators are trying to get surveillance videos from the area, but they said the first ones they've seen aren't very helpful, because of trees and the configuration of the area.
