As OU fans prepare for a new football season, the Norman Police Department is trying to avoid the same old problem that happens every season: traffic congestion.

Take a closer look at alternate routes into Norman

The department is urging fans who travel to Norman for the football games this season to arrive early, and consider taking routes other than Interstate 35 to access the stadium.

The I-35 Overpass at Main Street is under construction, and there's no egress between Main and I-35. The South Canadian River Bridge on the south end is also under construction and narrowed to two lanes both directions.

Police say northbound drivers on I-35 should use Highway 9 or Lindsey Street. Southbound drivers are encouraged to use Exit 113 onto Highway 77, and Exit 112 to Tecumseh Road to avoid the construction zone altogether.

Fans traveling southbound are also urged to avoid I-35 and try these roads instead:

  • Western Avenue/60th NW has been widened to four lanes into Norman to Tecumseh Road.
  • Sunnylane Road/Porter Avenue and Sooner Road/12th Avenue NE also provide easy access into the Norman Area.
