Convicted Felon Rents Out OKC Home He Doesn't Own

City police investigating a possible scam here in the metro. We're told a man tried to rent out a home he didn't own.

Phillip Irwin is out more than 1,000 bucks, and he thinks there could be other people who've fallen for the scam and don't even know it.

The guy behind it all gave out a fake name and story, and turns out, he has quite a rap sheet for similar crimes in the past.

"I didn't get any dishonest vibes from him at all," Irwin said.

Kevin Hunley did a pretty good sales job. Phillip Irwin thought he'd be moving into this house near N.W. 122nd and MacArthur. He saw it posted on Craigs List, called the owner and scheduled a tour. He wasn't the only one.

"He says, ‘well they're blowing up my phone, so if you're interested, then I need to know whether or not you can come up with the deposit,'" Irwin said.

Phillip paid more than $1,000 for a deposit and rent. That was a big regret when he later a saw a "foreclosure" sign on the door.

"I got scammed, you know? I started kicking myself," Irwin said.

Kevin Hunley is actually Rhonald Baggott. He's on probation in Oklahoma County for a 2008 forgery conviction. He's also done time in prison for embezzlement.

"It was quite the shock to see that because he'd stayed in touch, was regularly texting me," Irwin said.

We called Baggott on Friday. Twice he didn't answer, then called back and said he rented out the house weeks ago.

We found it strange that there were boxes on the front porch from Wal-Mart, addressed to someone else who doesn't live there.

"Every step of the way, my heart sinks further and further," Irwin said.

Phillip wants his money back, and says next time he'll go through a rental agency. He filed a police report, and anyone else who paid to rent that home should call Oklahoma City Police.
