The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly shooting involving an off-duty trooper.

OHP says the trooper shot one man dead and they're searching for a man on the run.

Motel guests who say the shots rang out only feet from their rooms. Just after 1 a.m. they heard gunshots and walked out of their rooms to see a man bleeding and lying on the ground.

"I heard three gunshots," Ray Reil said.

Reil says he and his wife Kimberly were sleeping upstairs at the Best Budget Inn on Admiral and Sheridan Roads when an off-duty trooper shot and killed a man.

"This morning has been straight hell," Reil said.

Reil and other guests staying at the Best Budget Inn said investigators questioned them about the shooting.

The scene came to a standstill when investigators arrived on scene.

"The OHP and the Tulsa Police Department would not let anybody come outside," Reil said. "They wanted everybody away from everything."

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the off-duty officer saw two men with guns.

The off-duty trooper got out of his car, told the men he was a trooper, felt threatened and fired at one of the men, killing him, police said.

OHP said once an off-duty trooper identifies himself, he's essentially on duty at that point.

"Once he identified himself as a state trooper it's essentially an officer-involved shooting," OHP Capt. George Brown said.

The suspect was found on the second story of the motel right next to Reil's room.

"My wife is not sleeping well, every time she tries to lay her head down to try to sleep she is traumatized," Reil said.

The other man ran away and now they're looking for him, but they haven't released a description of him, according to OHP.

OHP isn't releasing the name of the trooper involved in the shooting or the name of the victim. We're told an update will come on Tuesday.
