TULSA, Oklahoma -

Animal rescuers took in an estimated 25 Chihuahuas from a hoarder Monday afternoon. The dogs were taken from a woman in the 2100 block of East Tecumseh.

The woman refused to sign the dogs over to Tulsa Animal Control, so the Humane Society of Tulsa, a no-kill shelter, stepped in.

Dan Canfield and Evan Fadem of the Humane Society of Tulsa accepted the dogs.

"She's well over the legal limit," Fadem said. "She has way too many dogs; she can't handle it."

The rescuers said it's all too common an occurrence.

"Unfortunately in hoarding cases they really wait till the last minute," Dan Canfield said. "They try to keep it from the public as much as they can."

The dogs will need to be neutered or spayed, vaccinated and wormed, fed and cared for.

"Anytime we go into a situation like this where we take in this many animals, it really puts a strain on our resources," she said.

Fadem said the Society has been called on to help with several animal hoarders this year. They took in about 20 cats from a hoarding case after the Moore tornado in May, 47 Jack Russell terriers in July and two groups of cats - 14 and 8 - from two homes in August.

The dogs will be available for adoption after they receive medical care. Learn more about adopting a rescue pet or donating to the Humane Society of Tulsa.
