Police arrested at 40-year-old babysitter accused of grabbing a toddler's head and pushing her to the ground.
A mother says on the afternoon of September 21, she dropped her 18-month-old daughter off at Christy Canfield's apartment on S. Boulevard near E. 9th Street. The mother says as she left, her daughter began to cry.
The mother told police that's when Canfield grabbed the little girl's head and shoved her back into the apartment, causing her to fall down. The woman says Canfield then told the child to "shut up" and slammed the screen door shut.
The woman immediately returned to the apartment, retrieved her daughter, and called police. When officers arrived, another woman said she'd witnessed the incident and corroborated the mother's story.
An officer also noticed the little girl had an abrasion on her nose, which the mother said happened when Canfield pushed her to the ground.
Canfield denied hitting the girl, and said the toddler must have run into the door because "she's always running into things." When police said others had witnessed the incident, Canfield stated she must have accidentally hit the girl while trying to keep a dog in the apartment.
Police looked through the apartment and said there was no evidence Canfield had a dog.
Canfield was arrested for felony abuse of a child.
