OKLAHOMA CITY -

EMSA is seeing what it can salvage from an Ambulance that was allegedly stolen by a juvenile Sunday night in front of two paramedics.

Police say the juvenile flipped the ambulance on Interstate 44 after first striking a power pole. He suffered minor injuries.

According to EMSA, the top speed of the ambulance was 79 miles per hour.

At 11:45 p.m. Sunday, two EMSA medics were stopped at an On-Cue gas station at S.W. 59th Street and Western.

With one inside the store, one heard what sounded like someone banged on the door of the ambulance.

When he got out the vehicle to investigate, a person started walking at him with his hands in his belt to indicate he had a gun.

"He gave him the gut feeling that something was not right," said EMSA General Manager Jim Winham.

"In a matter of seconds he opened the door, jumped into the vehicle, put it in drive and hit the road," Winham added.

The keys were still in the ignition and the engine was running.

EMSA says that's standard procedure to ensure a consistent temperature for patients, the medical equipment, and medications inside the ambulance.

"A patient that is sick or injured will require to be hot or cold," said Winham, who tells News 9 the paramedics involve did nothing wrong.
