Police say a man wearing a gorilla mask robbed a convenience store in Oklahoma City at gunpoint on Sunday, September 29.

It happened inside the Western Food Mart at about 9 a.m. Sunday. The store clerk got the scare of his life, but fortunately he's okay. He's thankful surveillance cameras were rolling.

The video shows the armed robber walking right behind the counter pointing that assault rifle right at the clerk, and wearing a black and white hoodie and gorilla mask to disguise his identity.

The outside camera managed to capture this image of his car as he pulled up.

"That was so terrible, I cannot believe that," said Markita Tate, a regular customer here at the Western Food Mart. "I shop here and get gas a lot, and I just can't believe that that happened."

Sonrisa Nowicki runs the phone stand nearby, and is not surprised that it happened. She says crime here is rampant, even in broad daylight.

"I had a couple of customers here, they were sitting in my tent," said Nowicki. "They went back to get their belongings out of their truck, and not 4 minutes later, everything in the truck was gone!"

Nowicki said that was just three days before the armed robbery happened.

The video of Sunday morning's robbery shows the robber backing up, still holding the assault rifle as the clerk puts cash into the towel provided to him.

Police say that clerk did exactly what he should have during this robbery.

"The clerk did as we encourage the public to do, you comply with the gunman, and you live to tell the tale," said Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

But even with the clerk lying on the ground, the robber still comes back one more time, and steals a carton of cigarettes before taking off for good, leaving the clerk there, but thankfully unharmed.

We checked and police say they've been called here to this store 20 times in the past 12 months.

If know who the man in that Gorilla mask is, you are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (405)-235-7300.

You could be eligible for a reward.
