Tulsa Men's Soccer Team Defeats 49ers in Overtime

TULSA -- Omar Mata, Akeil Barrett and Cristian Mata each scored a goal to give Tulsa a 3-2 overtime win over Charlotte on Sunday evening at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 7-4-1 on the season and 2-2 in Conference USA, while the 49ers fell to 4-5-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the league.

Kyle Parker put Charlotte on the board first as he headed in a goal from three yards out on the right side with just 8:24 ticked off the clock.

In the second half, Cristian fed the ball through the middle and Omar punched it in from 12 yards out in the 47th minute to even the score. Barrett tallied the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick at the 58:12 mark, but Luke Waechter headed in a free ball that was put into the box on a corner kick to tie the game with less than two minutes to play and forced overtime.

Cristian scored the game-winner off a pass from Barrett as he drilled in the shot from 18 yards out. This was Cristian's eighth goal on the season.

The 49ers had a 13-7 lead in shots, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.

TU was led by Omar and Bryce Follensbee who each attempted two shots, while Tony Rocha, Cristian and Barrett all had one shot. Jake McGuire logged all 91:43 between the posts and earned six saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 19th against UAB. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Stadium.

Sooners Blown Away By Cyclones

NORMAN -- The Oklahoma soccer team fell in a 4-1 decision at the hands of Iowa State on an overcast Sunday afternoon at the OU Soccer Complex. The Sooners (3-10-1, 0-4-0 Big 12) struggled to contain a sharp-shooting Cyclone (7-7-2, 1-3-1 Big 12) offense that exploded for 20 shots (10 on goal) overall, including a hat trick from Emily Goldstein.

The Cyclones came out fast to open the match, posting an 11-3 shot differential in the first half. The Sooner defense did their part to limit the damage and keep OU in the match, surrendering only one goal in the 24th minute. ISU's Koree Willer put the Cyclones on the board in a frenetic moment that saw three shots in under 15 seconds of play. After OU goalkeeper Kassadie State saved the initial shot by ISU's Jennifer Dominguez, Dominguez sent in another shot that ricocheted off the goal bar. Willer controlled the shot and sent it past Stade in the confusion to give ISU a 1-0 lead.

The physical play of the match continued after halftime and Goldstein took advantage in the 56th minute, driving into the box to post her first goal of the match and extend ISU's lead to 2-0.

The Sooners struck back under ten minutes later on a set piece. Abby Hodgen fired in a corner kick that was nabbed by ISU goalkeeper Maddie Jobe, but the referee ruled that the ball crossed the line and OU was awarded the goal. With Iowa State's lead trimmed to 2-1, Oklahoma began pushing the Cyclone defense as it searched for the equalizer in the second half.

It would be Goldstein who would put the match out of reach in favor of the Cyclones, scoring back-to-back goals in the 71st and 79th minutes of play on breakaway runs downfield to push ISU's lead to 4-1, where the final score of the match would remain.

Oklahoma hits the road to continue Big 12 play next weekend in the state of Texas. The Sooners will open the weekend on Friday at 7 p.m. against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. OU will then head to Austin to face Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Southeastern Louisiana slips by ORU

TULSA -- The Oral Roberts University women's soccer team had several opportunities late in the match, but couldn't put the ball in the net as the Golden Eagles dropped a first place battle to Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, 1-0.

ORU (10-4-0, 5-2-0) and SLU (11-3-1, 6-1-0) entered the match in a three-way tie for first in the Southland Conference with Stephen F. Austin, who was idle on Sunday. With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip back to third in the standings, a half game behind SFA.

Following an evenly matched game through the first 45 minutes of play, the Lions jumped on the board early in the second half. Kelsey Salcido, one of the top forwards in the Southland, controlled a loose ball that deflected off an ORU defender in the box, placing it in the back of the net. Kayla Vera and Katie Noonan each picked up assists on the goal.

Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles controlled the ball much of the second half, outshooting the Lions 12-4 in the final 45 minutes.

In the 69th minute, ORU looked as if it was going to get on the board as Jennifer Abernathy had a shot get away from the SLU keeper Hope Sabadash. However, a Lion defender was able to clear the ball just before it crossed the line into the goal.

In the 87th minute, Abernathy again had a great attempt to tie the match with a shot from about 25 yards out that hit the cross bar. Abernathy led the Golden Eagles with three shots on goal, while Megan Giles added two and Kayla Keller had one on target.

Maddie Rhodes (6-3) took the loss between the posts as she recorded five saves, while Sabadash (11-2-1) earned five saves in the victory.

ORU will look to get back on track on Friday as they head to Houston Baptist for a SLC contest, followed by a date at Sam Houston State next Sunday.
