School officials in Moore are working to make sure construction projects across the district are complete for the next school year. However, six months after the tornado, there is now a delay.
Plaza Towers and Briarwood elementary schools are not expected to be delayed, but one of Moore's new elementary schools will be at least six weeks behind schedule, according to officials. Moore is one of the state's largest and fastest-growing school districts. It is currently overseeing six construction projects.
"It's a huge undertaking, and the folks in our operations department … deserve a lot of credit," district spokesperson Jimi Fleming said.
A new junior high school and an addition to Highland East Junior High School are on schedule.
"There's a whole lot of benefits to continuing the building process, and we're trying to keep up with the growth," Fleming said.
One hiccup the district says should not impact students is a delay in a future elementary school at 164th and Sunnylane Road in Moore.
The district says workers on the site determined the water table at the location is higher than originally thought. The water level calls for a different, more cost-effective foundation.
"We're going to save a couple million dollars, but we're going to have to delay [the project] about six weeks for the opening," said Fleming
That delay means the future school, which has not yet been named, might not be ready for student until 2015.
The other construction projects, including Briarwood and Plaza Towers are on track to open in August of 2014. The new junior high school is expected to open later that year.
