Tulsa Hosts National Handgun Shooting Championships

About 300 shooters are in Tulsa to compete for the national title in the 2013 Sig Sauer Production National Championships. The match features 18 courses that test a shooter's skill with a pistol.

"We've got some of the best shooters in the world here," said Phil Strader, president of the United States Practical Shooting Association.

"They're all battling it out this afternoon to see who's going to take the title."

The sport originated as self-defense training and now has clubs all over the world. Shooters move through courses, running through obstacles and reloading. The fastest, most accurate shooter wins.

Some of the competitors are sponsored while many others are hobbyists. Awards are given in several categories as well as overall.

"A lot of these folks here are doctors, painters - just standard working-class folks," Strader said. "It's something that anyone who likes to shoot can come out and do."
