OKC May Use Additional Funding For MAPS 3 Sidewalks

Oklahoma City is getting closer to delivering on MAPS 3 sidewalk promise. The city may use extra money collected through the MAPS 3 tax to pay for an extra 30 miles in sidewalks.

"We are $21 million ahead of what we expected the penny on the dollar to generate," Mayor Mick Cornett said.

The mayor is calling for $9 million of that to be used for MAPS 3 sidewalks. Voters were originally promised 70 miles of sidewalks with MAPS 3. Due to a miscalculation on the width of the sidewalks, 70 miles became 30 miles.

With the additional funding, the city thinks it will be able to build 60 miles in new sidewalks.

The city council and the MAPS 3 advisory committee still has to sign off on the additional funding.

"There are contingency dollars available for shortcomings that might be available down the line," Mayor Cornett said.
