Three Muskogee schools are this year's recipients of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe's Toolbox for Education Champions grants.

The grants, which are awarded to schools in Chandra and Jimmie Johnson's respective hometowns of Muskogee and El Cajon, California and where they currently reside in North Carolina totaled $470,000.

In a news release, the foundation says the Benjamin Franklin Science Academy in Muskogee will receive $50,000 for an outdoor classroom.

Muskogee's Whittier Elementary school is getting $47,000 to purchase materials for a new school library.

And the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee was awarded $40,000 for the building of an apartment which it says students can use to "develop the skills needed to live as independently as possible."

More than $3.1 million has been contributed over the past four years through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Champions Grant program.
