OKC Officials Consider Putting The Brakes On Uber

The drivers are really anyone and they use their own car.

Uber allows you to request a ride straight from your cell phone.

The drivers are really anyone and they use their own car. But what those drivers go through to work for Uber, that is why some put on the brakes.

"Changing the guidelines would change the guidelines for everyone, we will look at if that's something we need to do," said Oklahoma City Police officer, Capt. Dexter Nelson.

Offered in 20 countries and over 65 cities, Oklahoma City is not the first to raise concern over Uber.

"The police department inspects every cab and every limousine," said Capt. Nelson.

With questions raised in cities like Dallas, Nashville and Boston.

"Uber identifies themselves as a technology company, they circumvent all of those rules," said Capt. Nelson.

Passenger safety is the issue.

"If it works, it's a great concept. But we have to make sure it's safe for the citizens of Oklahoma City," he said.

We wanted to see just how safe and efficient Uber really is, so we requested a ride. After I put in my credit card information, the GPS located me and said Dale will pick me up in nine minutes. Just three minutes later, Dale arrived.

"I interviewed with them face to face, they had some training issues, they wanted to see my registration, check my car out," said Dale.

When police inspect cars, the vehicle is placed on lifts and thoroughly inspected.

"It's going to have proper breaks and it's not going to break down on you," said Capt. Nelson.

As for Uber...

"They don't have that capability, it was just a visual," said Dale.

And as for the driver's background checks and drug tests the city requires, semi-retired Dale hasn't had a reason to be cautious.

"I haven't seen anything for me to question the integrity of who the organization is," said Dale.

Uber officials were not available for interview. But the popularity of Uber is not in question. Dale said that in just four days of driving last week, he made $429.00.
