TULSA, Oklahoma -

Maybe you're feeling sick or rundown, and if you are, there is a reason for it, according to our doctors and nurses at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Department of Health.

Kim Jenkins, at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Express Care Clinic, in Okmulgee, says a lot of people are coughing lately. This could be associated with a combination of symptoms, such as a runny nose, nasal congestion and wheezing.

If you have allergies and are coughing, try antihistamines and nasal saline sprays. If it gets worse, go see your doctor.

Ronda Cherry, at the Wetumka Indian Health Center, is seeing a lot of sinus infections and one positive case of the flu, as of Monday.

Symptoms of the flu include sudden onset of fever and chills, headache, muscle or body aches, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and runny or stuffy nose.

Since the flu is viral, it has to run its course, because antibiotics won't help.

But you can try over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and OTC cough medications, antihistamines and or decongestants can help, too.

If you have the flu, stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone, and be sure to clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with flu germs to keep others from getting sick.

And finally, the Centers for Disease Control recommends getting your flu shot, if you have not done so yet. Peak season for the flu is usually February.
