OKLAHOMA CITY -

As winter weather moved through the OKC metro Friday afternoon, the reports of accidents went up along the highways. The advice given by experts was to stay home if possible and if drivers had to get out on the roads, know the basic.

Bill Hughes, a driving instructor for OSU-OKC, said that many people panic as soon as they lose control of their vehicle. He said most people tend to slam on the breaks and overcorrect, neither will work for drivers.

Instead, when a car begins to slide, the best action is to release the accelerator, and straighten out the wheels until the car regains contact with the roadway.

Hughes also said that many people who own a 4-wheel drive vehicle tend to be overly confident. While she admitted those vehicles can accelerate better, it takes the same amount of time and distance to stop. One ice, they slide just as easily as any other vehicle on the road.

AAA recommends drivers take precautions before hitting the road in adverse conditions. Make sure your tire has enough tread and the inflation level is proper. Drivers should also make sure windshield wipers are in good shape and windshield washer fluid levels are full, so ice and snow debris can be removed.
