Oral Roberts University struggled out of the gate on Friday night and could not recover, as they fell to the United States Naval Academy, 89-64, at the Mabee Center. The loss drops ORU to 1-3 on the young season.

"We knew Navy would be a very tough matchup tonight," said head coach Misti Cussen. "Unfortunately, we just had little details that we knew from the scouting report that just didn't quite get executed."

ORU came out sluggishly and trailed Navy, 23-5, through seven minutes of play. Though the game was largely a shot-for-shot contest the rest of the way, the large early deficit proved costly for Cussen's team.

Alexus Wilson was one of four double-figures scorers for the Golden Eagles, as the freshman poured in a career-high 17 points. Senior Christian Key knocked down three three-pointers and contributed 15 points.

Jenni Bryan chipped in 13, all of which came in the second half, while Kayaln Mayberry scored 11 points, all in the first period. ORU shot 44.2%, including 48.3% in the second half, and they were crisp with the ball, only turning it over 12 times.

Kara Pollinger led Navy with 17 points, and M.L. Morrison came off the bench to score 15, a career high. Jade Geif added 14 points, with Audrey Bauer scoring 13 and Chloe Stapleton putting in 11.

Navy shot 47.9% and they were exceptionally strong with the ball, committing just eight turnovers. The Midshipmen also controlled the glass, earning 46 rebounds to ORU's 29.

ORU's best stretch came right after Navy took their biggest lead, at 67-39, with 10:28 left in the game. The Golden Eagles scored the next eight points, including a three-ball from Key and five points from Wilson, to cut the lead down to 67-47 at the 8:12 mark.

But ORU would never get closer than 19 points down the stretch, and they fell by 25 points.

ORU's 1-3 start is their first since 2003-04, when they went on to win 17 games.

The Golden Eagles will take three days off before their next outing, the PSO Mayor's Cup rivalry game against Tulsa on Tuesday night.
