A Sallisaw woman is facing felony charges after police say she embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from her 94-year-old aunt.

Carol L. Wood was arrested by police, accused of embezzling more than $80,000 from Gladys Walters.

Police said the investigation began in 2011, when the victim's bank account was coming up short while Wood had power of attorney over the account.

According to an affidavit, Wood would cash checks at the local casino.

"Mrs. Wood advised that at times she would find herself short of money and write a check and cash it at a casino, but would replace it with her own cash," an affidavit says.

Documents show $81,660.76 is still unaccounted for in ledgers.

Police told the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith that Wood is married to the Roland School District Superintendent.

Girdner said Carol Wood owns a local business and served as a nurse in Fort Smith for several years and even took care of the victim before she was admitted to a nursing home.

Authorities said Wood was released from jail on $3,000 bond.
