James Woodard hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to lift Tulsa to a 63-62 win over Indiana State in the opening game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Wednesday night at George M. Sullivan Arena.

Woodard scored a game-high 24 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead the Golden Hurricane (1-4) to its first victory of the season. D'Andre Wright tallied 12 points, and Lew Evans led TU with nine rebounds, adding nine points. Indiana State fell to 3-2 with the loss.

TU advances to the semifinals of the Alaska Shootout to play the winner of the TCU/Alaska-Anchorage game on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. AKST/8:30 p.m. CST Friday. The game will air tape-delayed on CBS Sports Network.

Tulsa trailed 45-40 with 8:38 remaining in the game. The Hurricane took a 56-55 lead with 2:46 on the clock on a pair of free throws by Rashad Ray, but Indiana State once again moved ahead 61-58 with 0:53 after two free throws by Devonte Brown. Brown led the Sycamores with 18 points Wednesday.

A Woodard jumper with 0:27 pulled the Golden Hurricane within 61-60, and a free throw by Brown made the score 62-60. On the next possession, Woodard ended up with the ball on the left wing, and knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 0:08 showing on the clock. A defensive stop gave the Hurricane reason to celebrate at the final horn.

Tulsa led for most of the first half, taking a 9-6 lead that extended to 13-6. The Hurricane led 25-18 with 1:35 left in the half and took a 25-24 lead into the break.

Indiana State went on a 10-4 run at the start of the second half to take a 34-29 lead. The Golden Hurricane came back to tie, 37-37, with 12:10 on the clock, but the Sycamores jumped back to a 42-37 lead.

The teams then traded seven 3-pointers in nine possessions, which resulted in a 49-48 TU lead. Wright got it started with a 3-pointer at the 9:03 mark, followed by threes from Brown, Woodard, Brown again, Woodard, Manny Arop and finally the Woodard three that put Tulsa ahead with 6:38 remaining.

The Golden Hurricane extended its advantage to 52-49 with 5:04 left, before the Sycamores took a 55-52 lead at the 3:56 media timeout, setting up the final sequence.

Tulsa shot 38 percent for the game, and made a season-high eight 3-pointers, while Indiana State shot 42 percent from the field and made seven threes. The Hurricane outrebounded its opponent for the first time, as it took 38 rebounds to ISU's 27 boards.
