Winterfest's Outdoor Ice Rink Opens In Downtown Tulsa

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa's Winterfest is officially open and it provides 9,000 feet of skateable ice under the towering Christmas tree and twinkling lights.

This is the sixth year for the event and it has become a holiday tradition for many Green Country families.

For 38 days, Winterfest promises plenty of family fun, food, and free entertainment downtown, amid the shadow of Tulsa's art deco skyline. next to the BOK Center.

"I didn't even know about it, so yeah, it's definitely somewhere I'd like to come again," Brian Stoots said.

Organizers said hooking first-timers has helped the event grow right alongside stores downtown.

Last year, more than 100,000 people attended Winterfest, and it doesn't matter if you're a professional or spend most of the time on your backside -- it's a great way to spend an afternoon.

Some 35,000 lights on the 44-foot Christmas tree will turn on Dec. 1 as part of a progressive lights tour, which starts at Guthrie Green, swings by the Deco District and ends at the tree next to the BOK Center at 7 p.m.

In addition to the glow of the lights there are choirs on stage, carriage rides and a climate-controlled room.

Kevin Austin says Winterfest is a perfect date idea.

"This is an automatic," he said. "You're going to win on this one."

The BOK Center has a great December lineup, including the Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Dec. 15 is free skate day, but you also can get in for half price early in the week if you bring certain items to be donated to charity. Go to their Facebook page for details.
