Many Oklahoma families celebrate the holidays by attending fun-filled winter events. To spread the holiday cheer, several Oklahoma cities and small towns have already kicked off their celebrations this year.

Many Oklahoma families celebrate the holidays by attending fun-filled winter events. To spread the holiday cheer, several Oklahoma cities and small towns have already kicked off their celebrations this year.

Travel Oklahoma picked out a list of the top holiday celebrations around the state.

Winter Activities:

Downtown in December - Oklahoma City

Downtown in December, presented by Devon, is a series of holiday events and attractions in the heart of Oklahoma City, starting November 15. It's a one-of-a-kind winter experience that features thrilling outdoor ice skating, snow tube rides down a 150-foot slope, afternoon visits with Santa Claus, a festive 5K and fun run, free water taxi excursions, and a 2-day winter market, all surrounded by twinkling holiday lights. Most events are free of charge and there is an open invitation for all to attend.

Winterfest - Tulsa

This annual tradition, held in the heart of downtown Tulsa, sets the season aglow with everything from an astounding 44-ft. tree decked out with over 35,000 lights to cozy horse-drawn carriage rides along the streets of T-town.

Territorial Christmas Celebration - Guthrie

Step back in time and celebrate a Territorial Christmas in Guthrie, home of the largest Historic Preservation District in the nation. Reminisce about holidays past with the cheerful sounds of carolers, take a ride on a candlelit trolley or browse decorated store windows depicting Victorian-era Guthrie with living displays.

The Nutcracker Ballet - Oklahoma City & Tulsa

Share the magic of the season with one of Oklahoma's most endearing holiday traditions, "The Nutcracker." Each December, both the Oklahoma City Ballet and Tulsa Ballet present this magical masterpiece with their special touches.

The Nutcracker returns to the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City on December 13, 14, 15, 20, 21.

The Nutcracker returns to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center from December 13 through December 22.

Journey to Bethlehem & Bethlehem Walk - Oklahoma City & Tulsa

Celebrate the season with Oklahoma City's Journey to Bethlehem or Tulsa's Bethlehem Walk, both of which offer an interactive, guided journey through first century Bethlehem.

Living Nativity at Shepherd's Cross - Claremore

For a living nativity without the winter chill, head to the indoor Living Nativity at Shepherd's Cross, a working farm located in Claremore.

Begin your holiday experience this Christmas season with a stroll through Durant's Downtown Holiday.

Fort Reno Christmas Guns - El Reno

Celebrate an old-fashioned Christmas tradition in style with a visit to Fort Reno's Christmas Guns event, held at Historic Fort Reno in El Reno.

Holiday Light Displays

Festival of Light – Chickasha

In 2013, Chickasha's Festival of Lights begins just before Thanksgiving on November 23rd and runs through New Year's Eve. The park is open each evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Christmas in the Park – Elk City

Activities include rides on the candy cane express train, old fashioned horse-drawn carriages and rides on the centennial carousel. Catch a ride on the double-decker bus and see thousands of beautiful light displays while you enjoy delicious hot cocoa , all free on Friday and Saturday nights from 6:00pm till 9:00pm.

Holiday Lights Spectacular – Midwest City

In 2013, Midwest City's Holiday Lights Spectacular begins just before Thanksgiving on November 22nd and runs through December 30th. The display is open each evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Crystal Christmas – Woodward

Woodward's Crystal Christmas, located in northwest Oklahoma, glistens like a gem each year against the dark, wintry backdrop of still December evenings. Sun. thru Thurs. 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm,

Fri. & Sat. 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Kingfisher in Lights - Kingfisher

Drive through the park or take a trip on the miniature train to see the over 70 displays and over 2 million lights. On weekends there are horse-drawn carriage rides too. View the exquisitely lit, 100 year old swinging bridge and many more beautifully designed displays.

• Sunday thru Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

• Friday & Saturday, 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Opening Day is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Kingfisher in Lights operates through December 30.

Christmas in the Park – Yukon

In 2013, Yukon's Christmas in the Park begins just before Thanksgiving on November 23rd and runs through New Year's Eve. The area is open each evening from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Garden of Lights – Muskogee

Experience animated displays and over 1,000,000 shimmering lights at Muskogee's annual Garden of Lights.
