As the News 9 weather team and other forecasters predict a nasty winter storm and freezing temperatures, the city of Edmond has canceled its annual Mayor's Tree Lighting and Edmond Electric Parade of Lights.

The city announced the events originally set for Saturday, December 7 in downtown Edmond would not be rescheduled, but will resume next year.

City of Edmond news release

The city blamed the cancellation on an impending winter storm and well-below freezing temperatures. Parade organizers say several parade participants have already bowed out, and they fear the weather would be a danger to those who do attend.

"We are incredibly disappointed to cancel this year's event because it is always a great highlight around the holidays," said Casey Moore, Edmond's Public Information Officer. "However, our first concern is always with the safety and well-being of the participants and spectators. We look forward to bringing these events back to the citizens next year."

The announcement of the winners of the Mayor's Essay Contest will still take place. It's scheduled for Sunday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. just before the North Pole Holiday Adventure at the MAC in Mitch Park.

Winners will be announced and given one free admission to the Holiday Adventure.

Residents are invited to join the fun from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and enjoy sweet treats, holiday arts and crafts, and a "non-melting" snowball fight. Admission is $5 per child.
