The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office is getting tough on crime this holiday season, putting out extra patrols. They're calling it their Christmas Operation with Additional Law Enforcement, or "COAL."

"Criminals will be getting a lump of COAL for Christmas from the Oklahoma County Sheriff's office, " said Sheriff John Whetsel. "Unfortunately during the holidays, criminals take specific aim at victimizing people through burglaries and thefts. We will do our part to reverse this trend."

We joined Oklahoma County deputies as they took part in operation COAL, searching for bad guys in some of their high crime areas in eastern Oklahoma county.

It didn't take long for deputies to make their first arrest.

One man had warrants out for several outstanding drug charges. Deputies found him at this home off north Douglas Ave. along with another guy who also had outstanding warrants.

Both were taken into custody.

"We just want to take them off the streets," said Corporal Mark Johns with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office Warrant Team. "You know these warrants don't go away. So if they have a warrant, they go to jail."

Deputies were also out patrolling this area near Harrah-Newalla road. That's where there were a total of five break-ins that happened in a six mile area just last month.

Now deputies like Corporal Sean Shelby are looking for anything suspicious.

"Vehicles backed up to areas, open garage doors, " said Shelby. "If I do see an open garage door, I'll go make contact with the owner, and make sure everything is OK."

Residents in the area are glad for the extra set of eyes watching over them.

"I think its a great idea," said homeowner John Farmer. "I wish they could do it all the time!"

Deputies are also making traffic stops during Operation coal making sure drivers are aware of any safety violations they may have. So that they can have a safe holiday season.

The warrant sweeps and burglary patrols will run through January 1.
