TULSA, Oklahoma -

A man threw a big rock off the Sheridan overpass onto a car below on Interstate 244, endangering the lives of a Tulsa woman and her 8-year-old daughter, police said.

Benita still gets choked up when thinking about the close call on Tuesday night.

She wants to warn other drivers to be on the lookout, and she hopes the person is caught before he does it again and the next person isn't so lucky.

Benita was going east on I-244, and as she got to the Sheridan overpass, she noticed a man standing on the bridge, holding something and looking at traffic below.

"He raised up suddenly, and before I knew it, it was too late," she said.

The huge rock crashed into her hood and windshield and in an instant, she couldn't see, was swerving, applying the brakes and trying to pull over.

She and her daughter were terrified.

"She screamed, ‘Mommy, Mommy, what was that?'" Benita said.

Benita says it was hard to explain to a child what happened and why, because she also has a hard time grasping why someone would do something so callous and malicious.

"It's just, oh, we're blessed to be alive and I know it, but I don't understand who could do something like this. Just a random act of craziness," she said.

Benita is sharing her story because she wants to warn other drivers to be on the lookout.

She is also appealing to anyone who saw what happened or knows something about it, in order to help police catch the man.

"If anybody knows anything, I just want them to speak up," she said. "It could've been my life, my child's life, could've been both."

It's a felony to throw a projectile at a moving vehicle.
