OKLAHOMA CITY -

An Oklahoma City high school teacher accused of a sex crime involving a student has been suspended from the job.

The suspect is a teacher at Capitol Hill High School and Oklahoma City police said they are still investigating before making an arrest. Police were called to Capitol Hill High School around noon on Thursday to investigate the sexual assault.

A student at the high school accused a teacher of rape and told police it happened about a month ago near SW 15th St. and Robinson.

"We're doing an additional investigation prior to making an arrest," explained OCPD Captain Dexter Nelson. "We want to make sure that this is something that actually happened as opposed to just an allegation that was made."

Oklahoma City Police have not released the teacher's identity because that person has not been arrested.

"We have not yet obtained a warrant for an arrest, we can't identify the suspect although we know who the suspect is," Captain Dexter said.

The school district has suspended the teacher while police investigate.

"They took immediate action to remove this person so that the person wouldn't have the ability to offend in that same setting," Captain Dexter explained.

The school released this statement from Dave Lopez, Oklahoma City Public Schools Interim Superintendent:

"The Oklahoma City Public School District responded quickly when we were made aware of an alleged incident involving a teacher at Capitol Hill High School. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of the students at Capitol Hill. Due to the seriousness of the allegations, the teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and is being suspended pending the results of the investigation by the Oklahoma City Police Department."

Police said they expect to have more information on their investigation next week.
