Arctic Front To Move Through Oklahoma Friday

An Arctic front will bring much colder conditions, ice, snow, flooding rain and thunderstorms to the state beginning Friday through Sunday.

There will be several rounds of precipitation, the first of which will arrive Friday morning with the Arctic Front. Light rain and/or light freezing rain will be possible during the morning commute. The areas most susceptible to a thin glaze of ice will be bridges and overpasses. Roadways, while being wet, should remain free of ice due to warm ground temperatures.

Temperatures will warm above freezing Friday afternoon keeping much of the precipitation in the form of cold rain.

The second, more substantial wave of moisture will move in Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. This wave will possess the highest chance of widespread, heavy rain and freezing rain. Temperatures in OKC during this time will be extremely close to 32 degrees; the magic number that, if reached, could spell significant ice accumulations - it's a razor close margin.

As the mid-level storm system passes overhead Saturday night and Sunday morning, the air column in the lowest 5,000 feet will begin to cool enough to start the changeover from rain and freezing rain to snow across all areas north of I-44.

Snow accumulations will be highest closest to the Kansas-Oklahoma state line with lower totals closer to I-44. At this time, OKC can expect a trace to 1" of snow. I'm more concerned with the potential for ice for the OKC metro, than snow at this time.
