A 19-year-old died in a fire southeast of Clinton, moments after his family left to get a birthday gift.

Dakota Parker was sleeping in his bedroom Saturday night when the fire started.

Dakota's father, Terry Parker, said he and Dakota's younger brother, Johnnie, were gone for less than an hour. He got a phone call that his home was on fire.

"It doesn't seem real at all. It's still like a dream, a bad dream I just can't wake up from," said Dakota's sister, Amber Parker.

Now, Terry Parker and his family are trying to stay strong after the tragic and sudden death of his oldest son.

"When we got there, it was so fully involved that I could not send anybody to search. There was already holes in the floor," said Besse Fire Chief, Keith Javorsky.

The fire was so intense, Chief Javorsky said Clinton and Arapaho fire departments had to be called in to help. A sheriff's deputy even suited up to assist firefighters.

At the time, no one knew the teenager was inside.

"He was in his room asleep," said Javorsky.

Chief Javorsky said Dakota's cell phone is what lead deputies and firefighters to his bedroom.

"I wish I could have gave him a hug goodbye. I love him," said Amber.

"He was a good, kind man, he didn't deserve what he got," Terry said.

Terry said now he's relying on his family to keep moving forward.

"We're good," said Terry. "We're going to make it."

The state fire marshal does not suspect foul play and has ruled the cause of the fire to be electrical.
