Flu cases across the state are getting worse. The Oklahoma State Health Department says the number of flu hospitalizations have doubled over the last week; but it's not too late to get your flu shot.

When you have the flu, you know it. Scratchy throat, high fever, aches and pains everywhere, and it usually takes at least a week to go away.

State epidemiologist Lawrence Burnsed says a flu shot is the most effective defense against the flu. And if you do get it, don't try to be a hero.

"Stay at home when you're sick. It's best to stay home and get plenty of rest drink, plenty of fluids," Burnsed said.

Between Dec. 23 and Dec. 31 of 2013, 63 Oklahomans were hospitalized for the flu. In 2012, 35 people died from it.

Burnsed says flu vaccines are especially important for very young people, older people, and women who are pregnant.
