After failing to register as a sex offender, a Wagoner man was sentenced to prison.

According to a news release, 40-year-old Gary James Neel of Wagoner was sentenced to two years in prison followed by five years of supervised release, after he failed to register as a sex offender.

Neel was convicted, in New York, of first-degree attempted sexual abuse with a child under 11 years old.

He transported the child across state lines, documents show.

An investigation by the Wagoner County Sheriff's Department, Denver and Aurora Colorado Police Department and the United States Marshal Services reportedly showed, Neel knowingly failed to register and update his registration from September to October of 2012.

Neel was indicted December, 2012 and found guilty in March, 2013.

Neel is to remain in the custody of the United Marshal Service, until he can be transferred and serve his sentence without parole.
