Thirteen Tulsa doctors are headed to the Syrian region and they say their Christian mission is to help the needy.

The group left from Tulsa International Airport early Wednesday.

While their homes are in Oklahoma, the doctors say their headed to the middle of a civil war in Syria where over thousand people have been killed in the past three weeks.

"Everyday Americans I think it is just good to know that in most other places of the world there is severe hardship and difficulty in almost everyday life," said Val Tramonte.

The doctors will provide medical care, emotional support and prayer to people who lost everything.

"Most of them are middle class people who are displaced and had to leave with just the shirt on their back sometimes and are now trying to make a way in a United Nations tent city and living in a tent with other families and it is pretty devastating," said Tramonte.

All 13 doctors are part the Christian group, "In His Image."

Among them is a psychiatrist to deal with mental trauma that comes with witnessing death and destruction. The others have crucial medical supplies.

"They left their homes and they don't have the access to the meds they had before. We will be in two different areas. One will be in a community which is more integrated into the community and the other is just a big tent city," said Val Tramonte.

The doctors say Oklahomans don't need a medical degree or money to help.

"Pray for the Syrians that they would find new homes and transition from a crisis mode to being able to establish and build their lives," said Val Tramonte.
