'Brady Street' Signs Replaced In Downtown Tulsa

A City of Tulsa traffic work crew replaced the Brady Street signs with new signs which read M.B. Brady Street on Monday.

The signs went up at intersections across downtown Tulsa. Crews also added "Reconciliation Way" signs above the new street signs at eight intersections from Elgin to Denver Avenues.

In August 2013, the Tulsa city council approved the name change after learning that Tate Brady, for whom the street had been named, had ties to the KKK and may have been involved in the Tulsa Race Riot. The council compromised on renaming the street, by deciding to keep the Brady name, but renaming the street for famed Civil War photographer Matthew Brady.

The council adopted the compromise on a 7-1 vote, even though Mathew B. Brady had no ties to Tulsa.

City officials say the project cost $3,200 and was paid out of Traffic Engineering maintenance funds. All of the signs in the Brady District should be changed out on Monday and the rest should be installed by the end of the week.

The new M.B. Brady Street signs will be installed this week at 30 intersections from Elgin Avenue to North 47th West Avenue.
