A grassfire that burned through Craig County may be out, but it left one woman in tears.

What was a raging fire to start with was burned down to small hot spots around 3 p.m. Thursday. But hundreds of acres were burned, and a shed full of memories lost for Yvonne Poe.

"Lost a house fire in 2002, Mother's Day, May 12. Lost everything on it," Poe said. "I don't like fires."

She owned the only structure that burned. She used it to store items salvaged from a house fire years ago.

My sister made a blanket, course that blanket now's burnt, that I had put in there to save. There's some ceramic plaques that my mother had made the kids a long time ago when they was babies. My mother-in-laws been gone since 07, I had crocheted doilies and stuff that was stored in there," said Poe.

Firefighters from 20 departments responded to a wildfire that was at times moving as fast as they could drive, driven by the wind in rough terrain.

"It had already jumped the first road it came to and just kept moving north," said Chief Kevin Wofford of the Vinita Fire Department.

Vinita Volunteer James Tracy was on his first grass fire, driving a truck, and stopping a fire just before it reached a house.

"I was able to get ahead of it and was about out of water, and was able to jump in there and put some water on it and knock her down before it got there," Tracy said.

There was a lot of property that was lost, just grassland, but no real significant structures besides Poe's shed.

Countless pieces of property and homes were protected by the firefighters.
