Find the right mascara for you
By Tasha Reiko Brown
As the updated saying goes: If eyes are the windows to the soul, then your lashes are the curtains.
But don’t fret about decorating! It's easy to have wow-worthy lashes when you choose and correctly apply the mascara that’s right for you. To do this, you must first know what type of lashes you have and what type of look you want to achieve.
Choose the Right Formula
Not all formulas are created equal. To give wimpy lashes a boost, you’ll want to choose a volumizing formula or one with fibers that thicken lashes by encapsulating each in a tiny tube. Want longer and thicker lashes? Try layering. I sometimes apply a coat or two of a lengthening mascara followed by a swipe of a fiber-based volumizing formula.
Waterproof mascara is a great fix for those times when you’re likely to shed a few tears -- like your best friend’s wedding or when you’re giving an acceptance speech for your best-actress Oscar. Since it can take a little more rubbing to remove waterproof mascara I use it sparingly even on these occasions. My budge-proof lash trick is regular formula on the top lashes, and the waterproof version on the bottom.
Practice Application Smarts
To pump up your lash ends doesn’t require pumping the wand into the tube. It won’t give you more pigment on the brush; rather, by pushing air into the tube you will dry out the product, so you’ll have to replace your mascara more frequently.
Instead, practice a technique I call “the swirl.” Spin the wand in the tube and slowly pull out, leaning the wand to one side as you do. Wiggle the brush against the roots, then pull through to the end. If you apply mascara only to the tips, you’ll weigh them down and they’ll start to droop in an hour or two.
A better strategy to play up tips is colored mascara. Plum will make brown, green or hazel eyes pop, while a deep indigo will give blue peepers extra drama.
